Endorphins are a chemical in the brain that give you a sense of wellbeing, naturally. They act much like opiates, in that they can provide feelings of euphoria, when an individual experiences an “endorphin rush.” A large release of endorphins can be brought about by prolonged, intense exercise, or an enjoyable, intense activity, such as riding a roller coaster.
Runners often experience “runner’s high,” in which their brain is flooded with endorphins and other feel-good chemicals. This process dulls any pain they might be experiencing, and allows them to happily continue their run.
When endorphins are released into the brain, stress, anxiety and pain are momentarily dulled, allowing you to focus on being positive and happy.
Endorphins are released when you:
Eat chilli peppers
Get a massage or acupuncture treatment
Practice yoga and/meditation
For a natural, free, and good-for-you high, try to do one of these this weekend!
