A lot of people have access to benefits through their workplace, but may not take advantage of having them. If you take a closer look at your benefits package, you may find that psychological services are covered. If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, or another psychological issue, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (the primary form of treatment I use) has been shown to be just as effective as anti-depressants in assisting those who suffer from depression. The effects of psychotherapy last longer, because you might attend only a few sessions, but you will learn tools and coping strategies you can use for the rest of your life.
You don’t have to have a diagnosis to see a therapist. You might worry that others will judge you as being depressed, obsessive, or anxious. A therapist can help with so many issues, from self-esteem, to stress, to relationship problems. It’s also a great idea to see a therapist before you have an issue (such as pre-marital counselling). Think of it as preventative care, so you can check in to ensure you doing well.
So many people never try therapy, but even just a few sessions can put you on the right track. It is helpful to take an hour out of your week, or month, to focus on yourself and your happiness. It is essential to examine the way you are living and the choices you are making, and to consider ways you could be living better. Therapy has come a long way, and it is very practical. It isn’t just talking about your problems; it’s doing something
Having strong mental health promotes happiness and success in all areas of your life. Your relationships, your job and your family will be strengthened when you are happy and have learned how to cope with stress and everyday challenges. Your family may be covered by your benefits as well, so if you are worried about your spouse or child, they can receive often counselling.
