How do you know if you are depressed?
Firstly, it is helpful to meet with a clinician who can discuss your symptoms and properly diagnose you. Depressive symptoms can often be tied to other disorders, so it is important not to mistake your feelings with another issue. However, the following outlines the symptoms that clinicians use to diagnose:

Do you feel depressed or sad for most of the day, or every day?
Have you lost interest in all or almost all of the activities you used to enjoy?
Have you lost or gained a significant amount of weight, or has your appetite changed dramatically?
Do you often have trouble sleeping, or do you sleep all the time?
Do you feel restless or agitated frequently?
Is your energy level low and/or do you feel fatigued?
Do you have feelings of inadequacy, loss of self-esteem, and/or do you put yourself down?
Do you have trouble concentrating, paying attention, or thinking clearly?
Do you have recurring thoughts of death or suicide or sometimes wish you were dead?
If you answered yes to any combination of the above questions, you may suffer from depression. Talk to your family doctor or a professional mental health care practitioner, such as a psychotherapist, psychologist or psychiatrist to confirm your condition.
Now that you are aware of the extent of your depressive symptoms, you are ready to reduce them, and finally, overcome them. You can start out slowly, by trying just one way each day. As you feel more motivated, try 2 or 3 ways each day. Try to follow the ways in order, as some of the exercises build on techniques you will learn early on. Most of all, keep trying, whether you are discouraged or not.
